Pastimes Boxed Set (Books 1-3)

The Award-winning Pastimes Series is made up of three novels following the family of Ain of Poitiers, cousin of Eleanor of Aquitaine - Duchess, Queen of both France and England, and mother of Richard Lionheart and John Lackland. Set in the Middle Ages in 12th-century and 13th-century Europe, the adventures move from the taverns, courts and cities of medieval France, England and Italy, from Celtic lore, the construction of great cathedrals, crusades and pilgrimages, to the courts of love and music, poetry and plays of the troubadours and jongleurs. As an era ends, hope, joy, grief and destruction devastate yet bind this family of artisans and musicians. This Boxed Set includes all three books in the series: Ain’s Song, Shattered Mosaics and The Entertainers.

    PRAISE FOR THE PASTIMES SERIES:

"I love this story. Alice Moerk has captured the mood and tone of the period with credible accuracy and rousing humor."---Dannie Russell, Uganda

"I love Ain, a strong, insightful woman."---Rev. Rosemary Backer, Holmes Beach, FL

“Alice Moerk blends depth of historical knowledge about the Middle Ages with strong narrative skill in this story of French beliefs and battles in a turbulent epoch.”---Dr. Elizabeth Waterston, London, Ontario

“a colorful adventure transporting you to a distant land.”---Tara Miller, Junior High, Kent OH

“a timeless tale taking me into the past.”---Emma Bouchard, High School Senior, Anna Maria FL

    AIN’S SONG

Ain’s Song is Book One of the Pastimes Series and the winner of the Florida National League of American Pen Women’s Best in Unpublished Fiction Award as well as the winner of the Eudora Welty Award for Historical Fiction.

12th-century Europe revolves around the remarkable life of Eleanor of Aquitaine - Duchess, Queen of both France and England, and mother of Richard Lionheart and John Lackland. Eleanor and her husbands, Louis VII and Henry II, set the tone for the era.
Ain’s Song follows Eleanor’s story through the eyes of her cousin, Ain of Poitiers. The adventure moves from the taverns, courts and cities of medieval France, England and Italy, from Celtic lore, the construction of great cathedrals, crusades and pilgrimages, to the courts of love and music, poetry and plays of the troubadours and jongleurs.

    SHATTERED MOSAICS

Book Two of the Pastimes Series, which won 3rd Place in Fiction in the Florida State Conference for the National League of American Pen Women, follows the family of Ain of Poitiers through the 13th century. Book One, Ain’s Song, won a Florida NLAPW award and a Eudora Welty award for historical fiction.

Two children escape the cruelty of England’s King John and cross the Channel to look for their family. Their quest leads them into a maelstrom of forces bent on destroying the Languedoc, the society and culture of southern France. They find themselves pitted against the armies of France and the Church of Rome and aligned with the peaceful and heretical Cathars. As an era ends, hope, joy, grief and destruction devastate yet bind this family of artisans and musicians.

    THE ENTERTAINERS

Singers, jugglers and players - the troubadours, jongleurs and acteurs of the Middle Ages - comprise The Entertainers in Book 3 of the Award-winning Pastimes Series. Tracing generations that began with the child, Ain of Poitiers, Frère Raoul - a young priest - celebrates his family in three stories that move the era towards its conclusion.

The Entertainers was written for young adults but it also holds a fascination for mature readers. Books One and Two won Florida NLAPW awards. Ain’s Song, Book 1, received a Eudora Welty Award for historical fiction.

A Sport and a Pastime: A Novel (FSG Classics)

A Sport and a Pastime: A Novel (FSG Classics)

    • Farrar Straus Giroux

"As nearly perfect as any American fiction I know," is how Reynolds Price (The New York Times) described this classic that has been a favorite of readers, both here and in Europe, for almost forty years. Set in provincial France in the 1960s, it is the intensely carnal story―part shocking reality, part feverish dream ―of a love affair between a footloose Yale dropout and a young French girl. There is the seen and the unseen―and pages that burn with a rare intensity.

Pastimes: The Context of Contemporary Leisure

Pastimes: The Context of Contemporary Leisure

    • Used Book in Good Condition
Pastimes is an introductory text. It gathers together the state of the art in leisure science and practice, reflecting as well a wide range of literature from the disciplines of sociology, psychology, economics, political science, and anthropology. More than a text that teaches the foundational meanings and roles of leisure, however, Pastimes is also a point of view. This text presents leisure as a human phenomenon that is both individual and collective, vital to survival and frivolous, historical and contemporary, good and bad. There are three main parts. Part one blends philosophy, religious studies, and the humanities in considering leisure as a condition of being human. Not only do chapters 1 through 4 establish the basic definitions and parameters for studying leisure, they ask readers to consider these concepts from their own personal framework. Part two is a focus on leisure's role in creating and reflecting society. Chapters 5 through 8 build on the personal relevancy of leisure discussed in part one and teach about leisure's contemporary cultural significance. These chapters rely on anthropology, sociology, and psychology concepts. Leisure's personal and cultural vitality are brought to a pragmatic conclusion in part three: leisure's use as a social instrument. Material from recreation and park studies is featured in Chapters 9 through 12. A History of Badger Baseball: The Rise and Fall of America's Pastime at the University of Wisconsin

A History of Badger Baseball: The Rise and Fall of America's Pastime at the University of Wisconsin

For more than a century, the University of Wisconsin fielded baseball teams. This comprehensive history combines colorful stories from the archives, interviews with former players and coaches, a wealth of historic photographs, and the statistics beloved by fans of the game. The earliest intercollegiate varsity sport at Wisconsin, the baseball team was founded in 1870, less than a decade after the start of the Civil War. It dominated its first league, made an unprecedented trip to Japan in 1909, survived Wisconsin's chilly spring weather, two world wars, and perennial budget crises, producing some of the finest players in Big Ten history—and more than a few major leaguers. Fan traditions included torchlight parades, kazoos, and the student band playing "A Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight" as early as 1901.

There is painful history here, too. African Americans played on Wisconsin's first Big Ten championship team in 1902, including team captain Julian Ware, but there were none on the team between 1904 and 1960. Heartbreaking to many fans was the 1991 decision to discontinue baseball as a varsity sport at the university. Today, Wisconsin is the only member of the Big Ten conference without a men's baseball team.

Appendixes provide details of team records and coaches, All Big Ten and All American selections, Badgers in the major leagues, and Badgers in the amateur free-agent draft.

American Pastimes: the Very Best of Red Smith (The Library of America)

American Pastimes: the Very Best of Red Smith (The Library of America)

Walter Wellesley “Red” Smith was the most widely read sportswriter of the last century and the first to win the Pulitzer Prize for commentary. From the 1940s to the 1980s, his nationally syndicated columns for the New York Herald Tribune and later for The New York Times traversed the world of sports with literary panache and wry humor. “I’ve always had the notion,” Smith once said, “that people go to spectator sports to have fun and then they grab the paper to read about it and have fun again.” Now, writer and editor (and inventor of Rotisserie League Baseball) Daniel Okrent presents the best of Smith’s inimitable columns—miniature masterpieces that remain the gold standard in sportswriting.

Here are Smith’s indelible profiles of sports luminaries, which show his gift for distilling a career’s essence in a single column. Unforgettable accounts of historic occasions—Bobby Thompson’s Shot Heard ’Round the World, Don Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series, the first Ali-Frazier fight—are joined by more offbeat stories that display Smith’s unmistakable wit, intelligence, and breadth of feeling. Here, too, are more personal glimpses into Smith’s life and work, revealed in stories about his lifelong passion for fishing and in “My Press-Box Memoirs,” a 1975 reminiscence for Esquire collected here for the first time.
